Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which models will the kit fit?
  • The Cold Air Induction Kit will fit all Kawasaki VN series cruisers with EFI fuel injection. This includes the Classic, Nomad and Mean Streak models.

  • Do I have to make any modifications? If so, are they permanent?
  • No, the only modifications needed are those to remove the original air intake system and related items that are not required with the new installation.

The only decision that you need to make is to remove the plastic cross tube from between the cylinders or not.

We include instructions on removing it without removing the fuel tank or throttle body. However, this requires that the tube be cut for removal. The choice to leave it in place or remove it is up to you. To replace the cross tube at a later date, when replacing the original system to offer the machine for sale, for example, will require that the fuel tank and throttle body be removed.

We have fitted the Aus-Air kit, both with and without the cross tube and include pictures in the fitting instructions to demonstrate what it will look like should you elect to leave the tube in place.

  • If the Aus-Air kit delivers more performance, then how can the fuel economy improve?
  • Good Question. Basically, because you don't have to wind the throttle on as much to achieve the riding style you are used to. Torque increases at a lower engine speed than a stock system.

  • Do I need an additional fuel managment computer?
  • No, you dont need an additional computer. However, in order to achieve all of the benefits of the Aus-Air cold air induction kit, we recommend that you fit the Techlusion TFI computer and a free flowing/modified exhaust system. As you are already aware, fitting the Aus-Air kit together with a free flowing/modified exhaust will improve things a great deal, but fitting the Techlusion TFI will complete the package.

Fuel economy and power gains will increase with each step taken. The choice is yours.

  • How does the Aus-Air kit differ from the others?
  • Most kits consist of an adaptor plate and air filter assembly. In some cases, the adaptor plate obstructs or 'shrouds' the throttle chambers, forcing the air flow to be disturbed.

The Aus-Air kit increases the length of the throttle chambers and also increases the air velocity into the fuel injection system. The filter element has been designed to enhance the air flow into the unit.

  • Does the kit contain any aluminium castings?
  • No. All parts are CNC machined from billet alloys.

  • Are parts always available?
  • Yes. All parts are available upon request. For example, should you scratch the outer case, a simple request will yield a new replacement part. You can find the replacement parts order form here.

The whole kit is proudly produced in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

  • Do I need a 'Wet Sock' for wet weather riding?
  • No. We designed the filter element to be water repellent and providing it is maintained correctly, you will not need to resort to this in normal wet weather riding. This includes leaving your bike standing in the rain for a period of time. Should the element be inundated momentarily, air will be drawn in from the unaffected sides of the element.

  • Can I fit the kit myself?
  • Anyone with a basic knowledge of mechanics can fit the Aus-Air kit in under an hour. A very comprehensive list of step-by-step instructions are included with every Aus-Air kit.

  • Does the Aus-Air kit impede the operation of the rear foot brake?
  • No. Careful consideration was made to this aspect of the design. The Aus-Air kit does NOT impede the safe operation of the rear foot brake.

Warning: If your current air filter system impedes the operation of the rear foot brake, your insurance company may rule your motorcycle as being unsafe and deny any accident claim you make. If in doubt, check with your insurer.

  • Do I need to change the engine management computer settings?
  • No you don't. Besides, no changes are possible with the standard Kawasaki engine management computer. The standard computer uses a 'fixed map' system. The only way to make adjustments to the engine management system is to fit the Techlusion TFI computer system.

A point to note is when you are just modifying the exhaust system, the standard ECM does NOT 'learn' the new adjustments. Likewise, it is unfair to expect the Techlusion TFI computer, to deliver top results without the 'air' to work with.

  • Why the issue with the crankcase breather?
  • Some kits allow the crankcase residue to be exposed to the air filter element, with detrimental effects. We have located the crankcase breather within a gallery so that no residue will contaminate the filter element. This is important if the engine 'breathes' a little as the kilometers add up. Or, if the crankcase is slightly overfilled with oil.

Any residue is situated within the gallery and is directed toward the moisture drain. The gallery may be cleaned during normal filter maintenance.

  • Do all the original systems work with the Aus-Air kit installed?
  • Yes. All standard systems work as per normal. The engine 'Clean Air' suction tube is fitted to the kit and functions as normal. It does not need to be plugged as with some other kits. However, the air injection reed valve tubes do require plugging when a free flowing/modified exhaust is fitted.

  • Do you have any performance figures?
  • No. We originally designed the Aus-Air kit to remove the 'ping' and to enhance the tractability of the engine. We didn't design it with just performance in mind, that was something that occured naturally due to the hidden abilities of the engine.

  • My bike is still under warranty, will fitting the Aus-Air kit affect my warranty?
  • No. We don't believe it will. However, check with your dealer if you have any doubts. A lot of dealers fit air induction kits before delivery. At worst, your dealer may insist on installing the kit for you.

  • What parts do I need to fit the Aus-Air kit?
  • You wont need any parts, as they are all supplied with the Aus-Air kit. You will however, need a smear of grease for the gaskets and a thread sealing compound.

  • Do I need any special tools to fit the Aus-Air kit?
  • All the tools required to fit the Aus-Air kit should be in your toolbox. A good heatgun is recommended if you decide to remove the cross tube, however, a hair dryer may suffice.
